The fire was reported by an automatic alarm around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Foam and Wash Car Wash at 888 Violet Ave., in Hyde Park, said Roosevelt Fire Chief Lew Darrow.
Minutes later a passerby noticed the flames and called 911, he said.
Roosevelt and Fairview firefighters responded and were met with visible flames, he said.
Darrow said the fire appears to have started in a supply room that is located in the middle of the structure, but a full investigation will locate the origin, he said.
Firefighters were able to knock down the flames within about 25 minutes he said despite weather obstacles that caused freezing pumps and lines and a bit of slipping and sliding for firefighters, the chief added.
The department was assisted by Hyde Park police, Mobile Life, Hillside Fire Department, West Clinton Fire Department, with Arlington Fire Department on standby.
